Game of Thrones - Jaime Lannister's Gambeson

Okay, so I've officially added Jaime Lannister's gambeson to my list of things to make...you know the one, he wears it under his Kingsguard armor...very noticeable when fighting a particular character from the north in Season 1. (Trying to avoid spoilers)

Anyway, he wears it throughout much of his story so far and aside from it getting progressively dirtier, I don't believe it's changed since its appearance in that fight.

Now, my question is: How the hell does the closure on that thing work?! To the best of my ability it seems to be a tie closure with VERY long ties, possibly tied through something on the back of the front flap, but what, I don't know. It seems we get a peek of it in a few shots like this:



But what I can see doesn't make any sense to my eyes. It doesn't seem like there is anything that would allow the ties to be tied off in the way they are.

Since the show tends to base most of its clothing on historical techniques of clothing manufacture, I was hoping that someone with some experience in medieval costuming might have some insight for me...but at the very least, getting some fresh eyes on this can't hurt.

PS: If anyone has particularly good screenshots or any images you think might help me better understand this closure, I'd greatly appreciate them, because I'm starting to consider watching the entire series over again to screenshot the hell out of everything. :lol
