HTTYD2 Hiccup armor for my 6yr old for Halloween 2014

$

After asking for about a dozen different costumes leading up to Halloween 2014, my 6yr old son finally landed on Hiccup from How to Train your Dragon 2.

I used EVA foam to build out the armor... Here's a preview pic of how it came out:

*****************
Progress Pics
*****************

I started with making a duct-tape model of my 6yr old and then (using reference pics), I made paper templates for the leather armor pieces. I used EVA foam (2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 6mm thickness depending on the application).

After building the leather scale piece in foam, I used a wood-burning tool to etch the lines around the scales.

After finishing the whole thing, I painted it with a textured paint.

Then I painted it the Cinnamon color I wanted it to look like and began hand-painting each of the scales to make them stand out better.

When finished it looked like this:

I then started work on the chest armor piece. Working from paper templates I made by wrapping his duct-tape model, I built the basic shape.

...added some details.

Then plasti-dipped it and let my kiddo try on the pieces!

For the shoulder pieces, I started with the underlayer and made them from thin foam.

The outer pieces are made from thicker foam and the details are made from very thin foam.

I used little gems for the rivets.

After plasti-dipping the shoulders, here's what they looked like:

Another suit-up once the chest/shoulders were all painted and detailed (also his grandmother sent the pants she had made for him!).

Next up: Gauntlets. (sorry, I didn't take very many pictures of these):

...and the fake knife.

Jorah Mormont (Game of Thrones) Armor/Sword/Scabbard costume and some advice needed

Hey all,

So here's what I worked on for Halloween. I got a pretty late start so didn't quite finish it up but have been adding a few details for next time.

This is Jorah's armor from season 3 and 4 after he upgrades from the plate armor he had been sporting since season 1.

The chest plate and back with shoulder pauldrons are made from EVA foam with with vinyl and leather over top. The arm guards have a Kydex base and the "brass" details on the armor are also Kydex, though the sigil is craft foam.

The sword is made from a plywood bass with the cross-guard a couple extra layers added on and shaped with a dremel. The pommel is sculpy and the hilt is a PVC pipe I heated and flattened out a bit then wrapped in leather vinyl and finally covered with the fabric wrap. The scabbard is two sheets of plywood stacked glued and then rounded over. I'm waiting to replace those gold studs with some real metal pieces I ordered - they also go around other parts of the belt.

My question on the scabbard is how to attach the feathers. I haven't found a good option that will adhere to the black vinyl which is real slippery.

I also haven't found a way to mold a piece for the tip of the scabbard. It's a weird compound curve shape. So any help on those things would be great.

Interstellar Suit - Share your ideas/research

OK, I have a little less than a year for Halloween 2015.

On initial review, it looks like a white tyvek suit with a backpack, shoulderpad, vest and neckring combo would simulate enough for a costume version.
Add patches, greeblies...

Please share any info or research you find on making the real suits. Hi res pics. behind the scenes pics.
I'll start. It was forty pounds and Anne Hathaway's favorite costume ever!

Hi guys,

not been on here for a long while. So if anyone remembers me then hi, and for those who don't know me hi :)

I have been searching for pepakura files for the colonial marine armour from the film Aliens. I have search long and hard and just keep coming up with dead links.

Does anyone know where I can find these files?

cheers

WIP custom Xenomorph (on a budget)

Hi guys.
So, this is my first build. Its of an original character of mine, who with one particular person, a very close friend, I've been online roleplaying as for years. Well over a decade in fact.
Visually, he's a mix between the AVP Grid Alien and the aliens from AVP:R. But a little more streamlined, organic, and takes the torso from Resurrection Aliens.

Onto the build. Its on a budget, but I want to get it looking presentable at the end. I don't want to rush and finish with something looking shoddy.
To start with, I used cardboard and built up upon it with expanding foam. Once it hardened, I carved it down to the dome shape (ish) of the Xeno.

Heres where its at right now-

Now, the plan is this, and its where I ask for advice. What I was thinking along the lines of would be to build up detailing and such using air-drying clay, and then making a plaster cast of this. Then I'd make a pull (is that how you refer to it?) in either latex or plastic, to give a hollow shell and maintain a lightweight costume piece. Question- is this do-able?

I was thinking to make this costume as
a) light as possible
b) breathable as possible
c) Flexible. I want to be able to charge around and jump in this thing.

The head, cast in hollow plastic would be both durable and light, but not really sure its a viable option. I was thinking to use a long-sleeved cotton shirt and build up detailing with upholstery foam for the torso. I think if I kept the build the way it is now it'll end up weighing far too much to be worn.

I have a vision for this, but need advice to take it forward. Any help, advice or just general comments. would be gladly welcomed

:)

Ideas for displaying hats?

Hey guys!

I have a number of hats that I'd like to display. The ones I have are two from my dad from when he was sailing as an officer in WWII and my own academy, merchant marine, and US Navy officer hats.

The primary thing in displaying these would be that they don't get flat or otherwise deformed over time. I've been thinking about using model heads (like for wig display, etc.). Do you have any other ideas? The ones from my dad are pretty unique and I want to take really good care of them.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have. (And apologies if this isn't the right forum to ask this question. Just point me in the right direction and I'll move my post there.)

Cheers!

So I finally got around to collating all the images from my hellboy build. I did not manage to get everything finished in time for the party (The big baby), however I will post the construction pics of the weapon also. Hope you like it.

I have full articulation in my Right hand of Doom (I really wanted to be able to hold a beer with it). This was in fact my 3rd right hand of doom and I think I have the construction and design pinned down pretty well now.

I tried a few different approaches when it came to the horns. I really wanted to get a realistic bone effect up close. In the end I went with the foam horns and they had a great color and were closer to the actual horns. The latex versions were slightly too long for my liking once I pulled them from the mold.

Hello guys i just want to share my WIP on my mark 7 ironman helmet.. The pep file was from darkside501st and this is my second helmet and it is ready for some resin and fibers.. What do you guys think? Any opinions, suggestions, constructive criticisims, etc. Are welcome. Attachment 404188Attachment 404189

i also want to share my first build, not so good but i think its not that bad. My first helmet was made from recycled gundam boxes and some body fillers. (i dont know how to use reSin before thats why i only used body filler..) it is manually operated and got some led's installed. I cant post pictures of how i made the first one because of our country's super crappy internet speed. Anyway, thanks for viewing guys. Peace all.

Hello all,

I shared this link in the Hawkeye thread, but for those looking for Cordura and lots of other fabrics, these folks seem to have a good array of things to try.

They are an outdoor use fabric supplier called The Rain Shed. Found some darned close Maroon Cordura on there for Hawkeye vests. Hope someone finds something they can use.

Cheers - KK2

Hi,
I just wanted to followup with my 9 year old's halloween costume (currently zero votes in the kids 2014 Gallery--shameless plug--please vote--not just mine but there are some really great costumes there)

The Halo elite has digitigrade legs, and I think it was well worth the effort. To see my son wearing the costume and him walking seems surreal. The 4th graders were all trying to figure out how he was bending his legs like that!

So the teacher had some rules...the kids had to get dressed by themselves in 10 minutes...no help. So I decided to make the "pants" all one unit. In the past I had my son had simply strapp all the pieces of the armor on with velcro strips but that was too difficult this time with the pumped out-digitgrade legs, he couldn't even reach behind his shin!

I sewed on eva pieces to the pants after they were stuffed, and hot glued to those pieces....fabric glue never seems to hold well.
I went to many "furry" sites and saw those tutorials. The stiffness of the foam was an experiment...I got some chair padding but it seemed to flimsy, so I made a sandwich of soft foam/pink rigid insulation board/soft foam and cut to shape.

Mass Effect Blood Dragon - 2014

Okay, so while I've done about a half-dozen props, I completed my first cosplay about a month ago. For my first attempt, I had chosen the Mass Effect / Dragon Age crossover Blood Dragon armor. I figured the fact that it had a lot of large, flat areas without too much detail would make it easier for a first build. It also however made for large open areas where it was hard to hide bad seams and foul-ups! Live and learn - lol .

I started it shortly after NYCC 2013, and had some false starts, and some slow going at the beginning. But then I think it was about July or August I had time to buckle down and go whole-in and managed to finish it in time for NYCC 2014! This was my first time dressing up in costume since Halloween when I was about 5 or 6 years old! LOL Was a tad bit nervous, but a veteran cosplayer friend who went with me assured me "Don't worry, once you're in costume, it's really nothing!" She was right! :cool

I also threw together a foam version of the M-358 Talon heavy pistol to go with my armor, since the con was rumored to be throwing away people's non-foam props. May do a separate write-up on that, but it's pretty similar to my prior Talon build, just out of foam instead, and with a little less detail as it was thrown together in about 20 hours.

I went with a different color scheme than the usual shades of silver. I took my colors - with a little liberty - from this reference image...

I'm working from the files extracted by @Darhood, and then unfolded by Zero-Sama and myself.
The complete set of files is zipped up and available here: All Blood Dragon Pep Files .

I'm going to split the write-up into a number of posts on this thread. So without further ado, let's go!!!

Does anyone own an original Marty McFly Shah Safari shirt?

I've been pondering this question for a few years now, so I guess it's time to bring it to the masses for some input.

In Back To The Future, while there are many easily identifiable items (Nike shoes, etc.), the movie was made largely without any type of paid product placement. I mention this because, for as long as I can recall now, it has long been accepted by fans as a fact that the checkered shirt Marty wears in BTTF was made by a company called Shah Safari. However, as far as I'm aware this is the only Shah Safari item used in the film, and it has no identifiable markings (i.e.: they didn't have a deal with the filmmakers).

It wasn't until October 2006, that the Seattle Times posted an article about Shah Safari, where it possibly confirms that they manufactured the shirt as fact.
http://seattletimes.com/html/busines...rothers29.html

Which says: "To put their longevity into perspective, actor Michael J. Fox wore Shah Safari's three-quarter sleeve button-up in the movie "Back To The Future" in 1985."

Then again, I'm not so sure. I've spoken to one of the costume designers for the film who told me specifically that Michael J. Fox's wardrobe was all bought off the rack, because there was little time following Eric Stoltz's departure. Which would indicate that even if the shirt was made by Shah Safari, Shah Safari themselves likely wouldn't have known anything about it, until they identified their own product on the screen.

Someone else on these forums was curious about this as well several years back with one poster claiming they own one (but no photo evidence of this was provided):
http://www.therpf.com/f24/back-futur...s-shirt-34911/

Fast forward to 2010. In honor of BTTF's 25th anniversary, the site www.bttfblog.com was able to commission Shah Safari to make a limited number of replica shirts available (the shirts have long since sold out, and the website is no longer up). Here is what these shirts look like:

While it looks very close, and the cut/style is clearly very accurate, you will notice when comparing to the film, that it is not a 100% match as the lines are thinner/lighter on the screen used shirt:

Just recently, Screenused.com offered up for sale the original shirt actually worn by MJF in the filming. Though it has yellowed with age over the years from poor storage, it is clearly the actual shirt used on screen:

What I find interesting about this shirt though is the description they used for their auction, where they said:

"(Universal, 1985) This incredibly iconic shirt was custom-made by the production for use by Michael J. Fox as "Marty McFly" in both Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II. The white and black button down shirt was a highly visible part of Marty's main outfit and of all the Back to the Future costumes we have handled over the years, this is the one we have never seen come to market. It can't be understated how rare this shirt is. No size marked, wear from use and minor staining are present."

I've highlighted a couple of things there, because they directly contradict long-accepted fan theory, the newspaper article, as well as what I was personally told by BTTF's costume designer. If the shirt was indeed purchased off the rack, then it would certainly have a size tag, and obviously would not appear to be custom-made, as it would have a Shah Safari label in it. This could just be an instance of Screenused.com wanting to make their item sound more appealing, but I doubt they would mislead like that.

I am determined to get to the bottom of this! So, here's where you all come in.

If you own an ORIGINAL Shah Safari Marty shirt (not the 2010 reproduction), please chime in, but more importantly PROVIDE PHOTO EVIDENCE!!
While saying you have one is nice, without pics we are no closer to really having a conclusive answer about this. I've been collecting BTTF props for a long time, and I have still yet to see a picture produced to 100% confirm for me that Shah Safari was in fact the original manufacturer of this shirt.

Secondly, if by some chance you do own one and are interested in selling, feel free to let me make you a generous offer for it. I would also include my 2010 Shah Safari reproduction as part of the offer (which are becoming somewhat rare and expensive in their own right now).

Vera's Katniss Everdeen Costumes (showcase and current builds)

Hello!

I thought I'd put up all my Katniss costumes in one thread since I've been doing quite a lot of them. She's one of my favorite characters and one of the first I can convincingly pull off.

Hunger Games:

My first, the Reaping Dress. I don't have proper pictures with brown hair, Like the original, I found a vintage rayon print, stripped the color, then overdyed it. I used vintage buttons from my great-grandma's button tin.

Katniss Hunting costume. The jacket was a lucky ebay find, I made the pants, shirt, arrows, and quiver.

74th Arena: The only costume in my wardrobe I didn't make, as the screen-accurate replicas were easily available. Same pants brand worn on screen, NECA replica jacket, and replica bow and arrows. I made the belt, quiver, and heavily altered the backpack... which I need to get pics of since you can't see any of those in the pictures!

Girl on Fire: This is one of my favorites. This is made from silk. The top is draped and sculpted out of silk taffeta. The bottom hem is 9 yards of silk satin which I dyed, and rhinestoned with flames as much as I could afford. I built this when only two images and a spinning gif image were available, so it's not perfect but I'm proud of what I did with little reference. I won Best in Master Class at the Dragon*Con Costume Contest in 201(2?)

Catching Fire:

Winter Hunting outfit: I reused my jacket and props from the first hunting costume, and made a replica of the cowl. I don't know how to knit or crochet, so I'm pretty proud of how it came out. Also made my first attempt at wigwork by ventilating a widow's peak into the hairline to hide my own.

Parade Dress: This is made from laser-cut leather on top of metallic gold. I also made the wrist cuff and headband. I won Best Recreation in both the Archon Masquerade and the Dragon*Con YALit contest.

How to NOT wash blood out of shirt?

$

Hello all,

Recently I covered a shirt in fake blood for a Shaun of the Dead cosplay - now I'm looking to wash the shirt, but don't want to ruin all the fake bloodening I did.

Anyone got any tips to ensure that I'll "lock in" the stain and not accidentally wash it all out?

Thanks!
