Adhesive Question, trying to fasten straps to plastic armor

$
0
0
Hello All,

I am attempting to attach nylon or elastic straps to plastic armor pieces and I am unsure what is the best kind of adhesive to attach nylon or elastic to a plastic piece? It would need to have strong hold since it will be what holds the armor piece to the suspender like straps. I have tried contact cement with not much luck. Hot glue seems not to be super strong. Super glue eats through nylon (not sure if it does elastic also).

Any thoughts would be very appreciated

ID:	674024 With my previous (and first) Comic Con time cosplay mainly consisting of standing at the side whilst people took pictures of my Girlfriends Pyramid Head outfit, it was a challenge to make something to blow her out of the park. But I struggled to think what I could do as my maiden project (I went as a Division Agent last time so hardly much making), but having seen the SKS Props Orc (he has practically responsible for half this build so far), I knew a Blood Bowl Orc was perfect for me. A little obscurer than something from WOW or even the parent games (Warhammer etc) but I like that..

When it comes to the armour sections (yet to be made), the re-release of the board game in coming months will assist me to develop the builds own identity, blending old reference images with the Video game and the new miniatures. Living in the UK and doing this alone, RPF has been an invaluable tool and a key factor in this build ever going ahead, so cheers!

For those who don't know, Blood Bowl is set in an alternate version of the Warhammer Fantasy setting, populated by traditional fantasy elements.. that like nothing more than settling their differences with a good game of ultra violent American Football-eque antics, Sometimes they even score Touchdowns!

On with the build..

ID:	674025When I started the build I was working with old images for inspiration but as it was my first project, I did lean heavily on the Orc Build by Steven at SKS Props, the difference is many of the materials are different due a lack of availability in my area. "Foam Skin" in the UK is verrry expensive and lacking in any kind of quality control and I also struggled to find firm foam that would offer support under my feet when I made the platform boots, this is where I used something we picked up on when doing the Pyramid Head Outfit...

Expanding foam was laid onto a soft yoga mat creating very peculiar lumpy blob on the floor which was then carved with upholstery foam below the shoe to help raise the heel and provide comfort. This was all done before my EVA Mats (the Black Eva is approx 8mm across the build) arrived. Perhaps a couple of them would have been ideal to build up the heel, but that's hindsight. The expanded foam was then covered in thin layer of paper mache for protection

Like the SKS Prop, I then built up the skeleton of the boots, before covering in a smaller foam (3mm). As I lacked foam skin, I used combination of real leather (that given away to me and pleather, as I soon realised, the boots and gloves cover alot of surface area!

The outside of the boots is quite haphazard which is fitting for the outfits needs, without the mass produced work lines a Horde might benefit from, the outfits may be made by the player themselves (or a pesky goblin with nimble claws). The shin guards were created out of EVA with a template out of craft foam to make it symmetrical. A trim was added to both of the main pieces, and the toe cap with built with 3mm foam. Buckles etc were moulded out of Plaster of Paris, using liquid latex to make the moulds. Further fine details were added later on and I will go over this another time.

The gloves/ gauntlets were made at the same time in a similar way to the boots and the SKS Prop, I wanted to have one hand open to hold a Spiked Pigs Skin. I will talk about that in a further post, for now here is a picture of the gloves and Pascal for size comparison.

I went yet again to NYCC with my Daughter and we did do Cosplay for 2 of the 3 days we were there. we had a blast as we stayed at a airbnb in Spanish Harlem. just walking down the street in cosplay through Spanish Harlem to get to the subway station was quite the event too!

I thought I'd post some pictures of our time at NYCC 2016. I'd also say that I was also Thor BrOdinson last year too. I redid my outfit and this year it's 90% new. the only things from last year are the wig, helmet, wristbands and blue running pants. my Daughter, was two different characters this year, she was Gamora (which she did in 2014) and Poison Ivy from Batman The Animated Series with her spin on it.

Assasins Creed Steampunk Costume Questions

So for this years First Robotics the Game is steampunk themed so I thought what better costume to make than the assassins creed Steampunk outfit or something close. I was wondering where to start and where I would find any parts of the outfit such as the coat or pants? New here and excited to learn and build some cool stuff!
Also found some reference and some cool goggles on amazon that would total match the part. https://www.amazon.com/Black-Welding.../dp/B002DLYR8A

Abominable Snowman (Bumble-1964 Rudolph Build)-WIP

With 2016 Halloween around the corner we ask my 2 1/2 year old Daughter what she wanted to be for Halloween (Last year she was Ludo from Labyrinth)
See Thread http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=249666

So she says " YUUUUUKON!!! and BUMBLE!!!!" She's been watching that movie since June.

I told my wife this could actually be pretty cool since my Daughter is 33" tall and I am 6'-1" I am pretty sure I can build and almost true to scale Bumble with her being Yukon.

First I set out to get some screen shots and found a few where Yukon Cornelius is standing beside bumble.

I then imported the pics into Autocad and scaled Yukon to be 33" tall and seeing what that would make bumble size wise.

and that worked out to be

7' 1" tall 3' 4 3/4" wide at the Chest with an arm span of 7 feet

I knew this would be huge....but not impossible.

so my daughter and I began what she calls "BIG BUMBLE BUILD"

Step 1 -
Out of Autocad I printed a 1/12 scale version just on paper and traced it out on cardboard so that we could make a 1/12 scale version that I could make all my patterns off of.

Step 2-
She an I made our little bumble out of Monster Clay medium

After this I put tape on him and created my patterns....scanned them back into autocad and scaled them back up to full size printed them out on my large format plotter and started cutting my foam parts.

(I have pics of this process I may add later if their is questions about it.)

But I wanted it more than my spouse...

Funny ending scene in Guardians of the Galaxy, "But what if I want it more...?" "That's still stealing"

My wife had an old Ostrich skin purse that she never used. As soon as she mentioned cleaning out her old junk in the closet..."Oh, I thought you meant this..."

Anyone else have to make these ethical decisions?

Soldier 76 Build (Pic Heavy) - Jacket, Mask, Shins, Rifle

SOLDIER 76 BUILD

I haven't been active on here in a long time, but since I'm putting in a ton of effort into getting this build right, I'm going to log my Soldier 76 progress here!

For reference, I'm a 5'0" girl so my measurements aren't going to translate well for most of you normal-sized humans. I don't plan on changing any aspect of the design aside from wearing long white hair in a bun. So this isn't really a genderbend cosplay or anything, I'm aiming for it to be as close to a replica as I can afford!

THE JACKET
I first sewed a mock-up by throwing together a Vogue pattern for a leather jacket. Then I drew all over it with a sharpie to figure out the pattern and how to layer all the pieces. Then I cut it up and did a second mock-up to make sure it was right and would fit.

Once my pattern was finalized, I bought a fudge-ton of leather from the L.A. Fashion District. There's a place on Maple that has a bin of scraps that are $15-$30 per piece. I probably spent about $100 on the leather along, and painted 3 pieces to be white (x2) and yellow. The upside to using real leather instead of pleather or vinyl is that real leather is strong on its own (no interfacing required) and it's less stiff (important because of all the layers). Jacquard fabric paint is the best brand to use on leather; it's bright and doesn't peel or crack, but is like $7 a bottle.

I used normal polyester thread, but a leather sewing machine needle which helped a TON. I started with the 76 on top of yellow, then on black, then on white, then on red. Then I sewed that piece to the black. There is basically a full black jacket under it all to sew the various pieces to.

The front is layered white on top of red. I cut out the pocket shape and lined it with half of a zipper, then sewed it down to the front. I know it should be a functional zipper, but I didn't want to deal with that since I didn't want to have functional pockets anyway. I'd rather it lay flat on my stomach; Soldier has hella pockets everywhere anyway. Next I sewed the blue trim down the front. I also sewed the sleeves in layers, and tested them for length before sewing them to the jacket. There are like 7 layers at the sleeve seam, so i had to sew VERY slowly and my machine wasn't happy, but it did it just fine!

I also sewed down the belt part at the bottom of the jacket, and gave it loops to feed through. The type of zipper you need is called an "Open End Separating Zipper" and has the thing you hook on at the bottom so the jacket can open. After the zipper was on, I sewed blue leather to the inside of the jacket so it looks finished on the inside when it's open at the top.

And this is pretty much done! I still have to do the flaps at the end of the sleeves and make the harness, but I think the jacket is the hardest part of this build so I'm glad it's done. This took like 4 days and was pretty expensive, so I'd def say that the prices I've seen for the manufactured jackets online is totally worth the price!

bumblebee helmet

$

Hello there

I recently started a bumblebee helmet. The file I used is from
www.onekura.com

Here's the first pic. It's mostly made of 5mm Eva foam

That thing (circled red) I just. Stacked 5mm Eva foam those gray little buttons are 2mm craft foam.

I made those details with heating up (with a lighter) a dremel bit (you can use screw and bolts as well) and pressing it to the foam for 10-15 secs.

Afterwards I sealed the foam with acrylic emulsion (3 layers) in case you're wondering I mixed the emulsion with gray acrylic.

Then I sprayed 3 layers of plastic dip

Then silver color. Wait a couple of days before masking (give time for the paint to cure)

Added sunny yellow. I use pvc masking tape (low tacky) it's pretty cold in Germany so taking the tape off is always a drama. What I do is use a hair dryer to warm up the adhesive so I can pull the tape off easier. Don't use a heat gun!

Here's the latest update. The eyebrows are made of cereal box plasti dipped and painted. The detail at the lateral side if the eyes are made of sintra. I added the lines with a soldering iron. Only some weathering and the emblem are missing. Then I can call it finished.

Maybe I will build the whole suit. Maybe I'll build hotrod. It depends on high definition pics later.

Best way to attach plastic bottle caps to thin plastic mask?

Hi, I have a thin plastic mask and I want to attach some plastic bottle caps (will be cyborg eyes). There isn't much surface area - it's the rim of the bottle caps. Would super glue or contact cement work? Anything better?

Hi, For those of you thinking of ordering from Anovos, Here is some information you should consider from the Better Business Bureau....

Essentially They have a business score of an F. the have had 15 claims against them in the last 3 years, About to be 16. Apparently they are also refusing to answer several letters sent to them from the BBB. I am currently in dispute with them over non shipment of a product. So buyer be ware.....

ROBOCOP (1987) Costume Build

Hey everyone,

Just sharing some progress on my personal Robocop suit. I'll be molding and casting the parts.
This is my dream costume. So I'm really excited about finally getting to work on this after so long.

Here is the Torso Section ready to mold. It will be casted in semi-rigid urethane resin when done.
Stomach parts are done. Those are casted in tinted urethane rubber.
Helmet is casted in resin as well from an oil based sculpt.

Hope the old school Robocop fans follow along.

With the recent events concerning Anovos I posted I would never order from them again, but with Jose coming here and answering questions I figured I would give them a chance so I placed an order on Oct. 12 and my order was shipped Oct 14.

Just thought I would post a "Attaboy" for them that they deserve.

Jose Thanks for coming on here and taking the heat and thanks for restoring my faith in you and your Company :thumbsup

Still in progress, but I thought I will show it off a little bit. Still need leg armor to complete it.

How to attach elastic inside foam armor?

I have a few foam pieces for a costume - mainly a shoulder piece and one leg. I think the shoulder will stay on if I attach a piece of elastic inside to go around the inside of my bicep.

The inside of the foam is textured. I've used contact cement for all the foam-on-foam pieces. Would that be good to attach the elastic straps as well? Or would something else like hot glue be better?

Is there a RPF 2016 Halloween Contest this year?
