Iron Man Build - Looking for some advice...

Hi there,

My wife and I have been toying with the idea of building an Iron Man costume and are going to go down the EVA foam method. We are pretty confident with how to use the Pepakura files to assemble armour parts etc. but have a couple of other questions before we start.

1) Which costume MK would be an easier one to build to start off with as we haven't attempted anything like this before. Is there a suit that is perhaps easier and less complicated to assemble than others?

2) Are there any useful tips you could give me on how to create bends in the EVA foam i.e. for the Helmet. Also how thick should the foam be ideally? Also where I pretty much know how pepakura works and how to assemble the various parts I am unsure on how to attach all the pieces together i.e. how to attach the top half of the arms to the bottom half at the elbow in order to allow me to bend my joints in it and should we add velcro elements or anything in order to be able to wear the suit.

3) I've read a few things about prepping a suit for painting but I was wondering what the best method was for getting the best results? A lot of people have stated they used Plasti-dip, PVA etc. but I want to know if I should coat in PVA first then spray with Plasti-dip or do I just need to use one or the other?

4) Are there any decent tutorials a beginner could follow on how to fit the electronics and how much can I expect to pay for the lights etc. to use in the costume.

Thanks guys. I hope to start up a thread detailing the build once we get started.

Rick Grimes season 4/5 jacket

After searching for that really cool jacket rick grimes wears in the new season of the Walking Dead, I found from a post made by the wardrobe lady for the show that the jacket doesn't really exist. Click image for larger version.

It turns out she found the jacket at a thrift store and heavily customized it

So my plan is to do the same!

I found a very nice, very similar jacket on ebay. First thing I noticed is that the jacket only has 1 snap on the cuffs, rick has 2. I emailed the eBay member and they told me they could put 2 snaps on the cuff. I also asked them to make the sleeves a little longer so they hang down past my hands.

Sleeping Beauty Princess Aurora Light UP dress

$

Ok so I know I'm still finishing up my daughters Belle Costume but I've finally decided on my Costume. I'm doing Sleeping Beauty, however this costume will light up as well :)

So you know in the movie when the Fairies are making Princess Aurora's Dress and fighting over what color it should be either pink or blue. If you haven't seen it:

So I'm going to make my dress light up and change from Pink to blue a few times before half the dress turning pink and the other half blue....
How might you ask?

Fiber Optic Fabric.... I found this really awesome.... CRAZY EXPENSIVE Fiber Optic fabric. It comes in 12 different colors... And you can connect LED lights to it and the fabric lights up....

When I found the fabric I wanted to make something with it lol. I was like the fabric comes in yellow, I could maje the skirt of Snow White.... But snow is already in the parade.... I'd rather chose a character that isn't already in the parade... And then it hit me!
Sleeping beauty! I can use RGB lights hooked the fabric to change from pink and blue and even change half of it to pink and the other half to blue!

I've already written the code just waiting on the RGB LEDS and aurdino board to test it. I've never working with the RGB LEDs yet but you suppose to be able to make every color with them :) Looking forward to it!

So due to how expensive this fabric is I've decided to do a shorter version of the dress.

I'm VERY excited!! Its been ordered but it will probably be a few weeks before it gets here. Fabric is coming from France and the RGB LEDs and things are coming from China.
I also got some solid core side glow 8MM cord to make piping out of the bodice. I'll be able to hook up the RGB lights to them and change colors with the rest of the dress. I Can't WAIT!!! Got to get my daughters Belle Dress finished first!

Stuck, could use some help.

Hey RPF folks.

Chances are this won't get a hit, but I am doing my first eva armor, and having a hard time getting the chest piece assembled, Im about halfway through, but struggling with the back, and putting all together, and adding the shoulder pieces, and neck supports.

Then of course I have to wire in LED's to it, which is a whole nother can of worms.

Anyway, I was wondering if any experience EVA folks are around the sacramento to bay area norcal area who might be up for sacrificing a few hours to help me out. Can pay a little, not a lot since I am in the process of buying a house too, but I can supply cool videogame developer swag!

Anyway, I would appreciate the help.

Arno Dorian from Assassin's Creed Unity

Hey guys and gals!
Alongside a few smaller, less ambitious cosplays I've challenged myself to cosplay Arno Dorian from Assassin's Creed Unity this year. This will likely be a longer build, that I'll work on throughout the year in between the others I have planned. I've already started sourcing reference pics, design patterns, materials, etc but the thing I want to get as as right as I possibly can is the material for the coat. I've seen a few Arno cosplays where they've used a very lightweight, cotton like fabric and for me, it just looks too thin and doesn't have the same movement or look to it as Arno's coat should. Anyone out there got any ideas of what would be a good material to use?

He still needs a little work. A fan in the head Definitely helped!

And my niece also placed with her Battra build (Most Impressive) Keep in mind that all I did was block out the head and spray it grey... she did EVERYTHING else..... and she's only 11 years old. But since only 5 people knew she was Battra (and not Mothra... nor an Evil Mothra.. or a giant fly...) she is working on a real Mothra build now. We've stockpiled fur and feathered boas ..

As for me, not sure if I should rebuild Godzilla as Destroyer... or go for broke and build a proper King Ghidorah. I built him out of fabric a couple of years ago and was not so happy with it (my first full costume build ever) I have time as the June con has been cancelled, making the Halloween con in Santa Fe my next stop, and since I won free VIP passes, I definitely want to make a showing of it. Leaning towards King Ghi....

Kingdom Hearts: A tale of two Keyblades

$

First off, yes I know this is an older game, but recently my daughter just got into the games and loves them. So since there is a Kamicon coming up in Alabama at the end of the month I figured I would make her a Keyblade and let her have some fun cosplaying a little. So back at the beginning of January I set out to find some templets to make the famous Keyblade. Well I looked around for a few hours and could not find what I really wanted, I wanted to use some existing cardboard tubes and foam I had. So I figured I make my own template going off of the image online

Turns out it was pretty easy and a lot more fun than printing and cutting out a pattern from online.

So I cut everything out, and glued it to the large tube that I had (from a 36 plotter paper at work, I get tons of those when they throw them out). And I think it looked pretty good.

and it only took me about 2 hours from creation to cutting to gluing to get it this far.

So I have a keyblade for her, and of course I'm going with her but I didn't want to bring my Ironman foam suit, so I decided to make my own keyblade. Cut to a few more hours of looking online to find a design that I like and I ended up with the Total Eclipse keyblade.

Off to make a template by hand and scaling it the way I wanted. A few hours later of drawing and measuring out and I had my templates and foam cut and ready to glue

The next weekend I went looking for clothes that would work for my daughter to look kinda like Sora (which I later changed my mind on and decided Organization 13 for both of us would work and I already had a black cloak for me and got her on for $8 off amazon). While I was out I also planned on stopping at the local craft store to get some wood to support my blade. But I got a better idea and saw a bucked of golf clubs for $0.99 and got one of those instead, it would make a great support for the blade and give me a leather wrapped handle without doing it myself so Time saver :).

Now it was time to decided how to seal it, I've used Plasdip before with my Ironman suit and like it, but I was trying to keep this all under about $30 for both of us, so I decided to try out the fridge/oven enamel spray for half the price and see how it worked. A test piece of foam later and it gave me a nice sealed finish that didn't melt the foam, that I could then prime and paint over.

Now as of Today, I'm almost finished with both blades the Keyblade I'll finish up this weekend if the wind isn't blowing to bad, and then maybe seal them both with some matt clear-coat spray. As for my Total Eclipse blade, I've got one side finished painted and got the other side to do before I'm done.

TMNT - Leonardo

Been lurking on here without a build thread for long enough.Communities aren’t built on lurkers and after looking at awesome builds from @thorssoli @MattMunson @DarkJedi1500 @mikefu @MrGreene @Jamie Staff @Lunaman @masked rider and being inspired by the work of so many people on this board I figured it was time to get into the fray. I finally had enough to share and figured it was time

I’ve always loved TMNT and wanted a legit Leo costume. As a kid TMNT were, by far, my favorite action figures and movies and my first homemade costuming experience was my mom making me a ninja turtle costume for Halloween from dyed green long johns and a carved foam shell when I was 7 or so. The design of the turtle will be my own. I loved the costumes from the movies when I was a kid but I also wanted Leo to look a little meaner...and a little more "ninja-like" and have some of the design elements that I've liked from all renditions of the turtles (comics, graphic novels, movies, TV shows, etc)

In order to have a proper base to sculpt on I created a full 1:1 fiberglass mannequin of myself. I was petrified that if I sculpted on a generic mannequin or some other body double that I’d get to the end and the pieces wouldn’t fit…which would be devastating. I made the mannequin by taking plaster bandages and covering parts of my body, letting them set, cutting them off, and then using those as my negative to cast out of. I’d fiberglass/resin the inside of the plaster pieces, pull them out, and WaLa! mannequin parts. I then fiberglassed all the pieces together and I had a full body double that was almost exactly my same dimensions, success.

I was going to break my body down into smaller pieces for ease of sculpting (torso, arms, legs, etc) but then I decided that I needed to sculpt the full body all at one time in order to work on the silhouette and get the proper sizing of all the different pieces. I really want this to look like one, cohesive and well-proportioned ninja turtle…not just a collection of random body parts. The problem with doing this is that it’s going to use about 5 cubic craploads of monster clay…but I think it’s worth it.

So, here's what I have so far. Making decent progress on the body. it's all roughed in but fine tuning, detailing, skin texture, etc hasn't been done yet. I roughly sculpted 2 different front shells (right and left). I'm not sure which one I am going to go with yet. I think I'll keep adding detail to both and make the decision when I get further along. I've also got Leo's swords about 80% done and his shell about 75% done. Still a LOT of work to be done but finally making progress after scoping the project and working on the mannequin for a long time. Life gets in the way sometimes.

Need Idea for Comic Con Costume, Poison Ivy and who?

$

So my friend wants to do a duo costume this year and I normally do Fight Club. I also go pretty much all out. She loves poison ivy and was wondering what can of costume should I pair with it? I wanted to go as Dexter from the TV show one day as I get tons of people that say I look just like him. My body type is really buff and ripped (Think physique type competitors in bodybuilding). I know in the 90's Batman there was a bane and Poison Ivy duo but I am not sure if I want to do that.

Anyways, anyone want to be able to shoot me any ideas? I did think about Dexter and Poison Ivy being both killers or maybe a Joker and Poison Ivy (Do they ever pair up in the comics?)

Thanks

Whats under your suit?

I've looked around this site for a while, and I haven't seen the answers to some pressing questions I have regarding a pep Ironman suit I have been working on.

Namely, how do *you* attach your suit to your body? What do you do for feet?

I have worn medieval style armor, which essentially hangs off your body, with the most weight on your shoulders. Straps directly from hard points on the armor to wrapping around your limbs...but I feel like Ironman, Master Chief, Robocop type rigs allow or even require, a little more room for support structure.

How do you keep yourself cool? Remove the suit? Open the helmet? Or do you use fans? Ive seen football pads with a water system in them that circulates cooling water. I run hot and am thinking about trying something like this out.

Going back to feet: my Ironman boots have a bottom surface (not just a covering over a boot) - I plan to fill the bottom of the boot toe and heel with some kind of rubber or polymer to approximate a shoe sole - has anyone tried something like this?

Thanks and be kind please, Ive lurked here for years but this is my first post!

Costumes that would suit my body type

Hey guys,

I'm 16 and my other costumes have been things like Animated Clone Trooper, Iron Man, Tusken Raider, Bith Musician and now doing Deadpool.

For my next costume I want to do a character that is like my age/body. I'm 6ft and my body is muscley but like sort of Spider Man muscley as I'm an apprentice greenkeeper.

The only characters I can think of is Robin and Kid Flash. Also I don't think I look old enough and/or big enough to do Nightwing.

I also want to venture out to new types of costumes as all of mine have been armour and wearing a helmet/mask. I'd like to do a face character or even make up/prothstetics. I'm into pretty much every topic discussed on here haha so no franchises are outruled.

My first Ninja Turtle Costume

$

Hello everybody, this is my first post as well as my first attempt at a Ninja Turtle costume. I was going to wait until I finished it to post on here but I decided to go ahead and do it now. I am making the costume out of foam and cloth mostly. I have been filming my progress as I go so you can find my playlist on my channel below. Take a look and let me know what you think.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis..._82k9lOebXqD3P

As a side note, I still need to make the belt but don't want to spend a lot of money to purchase the leather for it. I need to get a piece of leather roughly 2.5-3 inches wide and 80 inches long to go all the way around the waist/shell. If anybody has suggestions to where I can find the material for that at a cheap price let me know.

Thanks and enjoy!

Foam Pepakura Star-Lord WIP - Pic Heavy

My friend, Kevin has decided that he would like to build a Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord cosplay. I am assisting him with this endeavor. So, I have decided to created a build thread to document our process.

Here goes:

First of all, gotta thank JFCustom for the pdo file! Great job. This is the version of the pepakura file we started with. Here's a link: http://www.therpf.com/f24/jfcustoms-foam-files-148889/

As with all foam peps we started by printing the file on card-stock paper, and cutting out the pieces.

Once we had the paper parts, we traced them onto the back of an anti-fatigue mat. The mat comes on a 4'x8' roll at Ollie's Bargain Outlet for $17.99. We ended up using about 1/3 of a roll.

We knew that we would never be able to cut out the round pieces of the mask perfectly enough to make pefectly round shapes on the mask. We agreed that the round shapes define the mask. So, we decided to improvise those parts with things that are pre-manufactured and are already round. We had access to some "10 dram" prescription bottles, and we agreed that they would suffice.

Here's a look at the foam parts laid out for assembly.

Those other round tubes are free pens I got from a hotel, and the inside of a roll from the receipt tape in a cash register.

Together, we liked the way they could be assembled into one another for the side tubing (and that they were free). As others have done with Star-Lord we also decided to use flexible drinking straws for tubing as well.

As far as tools go, we used some regular scissors, my curved lexan scissors, a hand dremel tool, some curved pliers, an x-acto knife, and a grinder.

Since the different sized tubes didn't all fit into one another perfectly we used some scrap foam to make gaskets for the ends of the tubes. This would give us a way to attach them together while still keeping the angles flexible during the build process. To measure the size of the gaskets we just pressed the tubes into the foam like this.

We concluded that the diameter of the receipt tube was approximately 5/8". So, we drilled a hole in the bottom of the 10 dram bottle.

We also found a drill bit that was the same diameter of the pen.

Cardboard Captain America shield

I was planning to try out this build, a cardboard Captain America Shield.

http://dali-lomo.blogspot.no/2014/03...cardboard.html

The guy in the video does not use resin or fiberglass to strengthen the cardboard, but I want to do that.

This will be my first build of anything, so I was wondering.. :

1: Should I put all pieces together BEFORE I apply the resin, or do I put resin on one piece at the time (will resin make the cardboard expand?)
2: Do I have to do anything else to the cardboard before I put on the resin?
3: Do I have to sand Down he resin after it dries, or will it be a smooth layer?

And do you have any other tips for me?

Thanks for all your help, will post pictures when I get started..

Tiefling Warlock D&D inspired costume (horns & tail advice sought)

I am doing a tiefling warlock costume for GenCon this year. I have several decades of experience with sewing, jewelry and some props but I am feeling a bit intimidated by the horns & tail. I am doing an original design for the robe & armor which I have under control nicely.

Here is a refrence image.
https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VEK_Ndg8O...eadversary.jpg

I have some plastic horns I was going to use making a worbla bit between then to connect them & do the forehead bit. I suck at sculpting & am a complete n00b with worbla so any tips for making this happen would be appreciated.

I have some beige fabric backed vinyl for the tail. I am trying to decide how to stuff it whether I want tio use a tube made with the green foam, solid foam or a foam tube stuffed with pillow floof. Not sure which would hold shape better yet be light enough since I am going to need to wrapp it around one leg when on the show floor so i don't get stepped on.

Also does anyone have any tips on hiding the seam on the vinyl for the top & bottm of the tail? I am going to have to paint the vinyl anyway to get it the right colour to match the horns.

Hello everybody! had long wanted to make this costume and thanks to the tutorials I found on this page I decided to do it, I started to build in early January and wanted to have it finished by mid-February, in such a hurry had to invent some parts, so the drawings and parts of the armor are not 100% faithful to the original. Hope you like it. Excuse my bad english ;)

League of Legends - Cinematic Leona

So I've been on the fence about this costume for a long while. I've never built any props that big and my experience with armor is fairly limited, but I figured this would be as good to learn on as any costume. I've decided to roll with EVA foam and I've also picked up some of Tandy Leather's new Terraflex thermoplastic to play with. It's going to be slow going, my goal is to have it done by Salt Lake Comic Con in late September. To gather references I downloaded an HD version of the cinematic and watched all relevant parts of the video frame-by-frame to get as many shots as possible. Here are just a few out of the MASSIVE collage I made:

The first thing I decided to make was the breastplate. I used a duct tape dummy to get the pattern and then transferred it onto my foam. Cut out the pieces, did a little sanding to soften some of the edges, roughly heat formed some of the pieces and then put everything together with contact cement.

For now it's held together at the seams with tape until I can get some Neodymium magnets.
