Reaper - Overwatch

Like so many others who had a chance to play Overwatch at Blizzcon, I’m eagerly anticipating the next time I can jump into the game!

For those that haven’t seen much about it, the game features simply amazing character design – it’s the kind of thing where someone like myself will sit in character selection for half the match, simply enthralled by all the awesome things I want to make. I instantly fell in love with the style and outfit of Reaper, and I knew I wanted to make his mask. The following write-up is a walkthrough of my build, I hope you enjoy!

For many of my mask/helmet builds I often opt to go the sculpting route, and the same held true for this project. I’ve used Monster Clay from the company Monster Makers for as long as I’ve been sculpting, it’s well priced, easy to use, and heat activated (which also means it’s completely re-usable!). The higher temperature the clay is the softer it is, which allowed me to quickly start blocking out the rough shape of the mask with warm clay.

After messily throwing clay on the head form, the next step was starting to refine the shapes and angles of the mask, and for this I worked in stages, focusing on one side of the mask at a time. The eyes & brow were an area of special significance on this project, as Reaper’s mask has a very pronounced expression that I really wanted to capture. Some makers and sculptures like to put their own artistic spin on things and take creative freedom’s here and there, but I really take pride in trying to attain perfection in relation to the source, making game assets really come to life!

The tedium of chasing symmetry was a large portion of the 100+ hours this project took from start to finish. To help keep things identically mirrored throughout the process, I periodically took photos and would throw a grid over it in Photoshop so I could measure proportions and angles. While time consuming, it was definitely worth it to get all the sleek curves and lines of the mask looking impeccable.
After I’m happy with the shapes of the main portion of the mask I moved onto the cheeks, and made a quick pattern with painters tape so the cheek portions would continue the symmetry I’d been working hard to maintain. Rinse and repeat the same process of blocking out, refining, and double + triple checking on the cheeks, and then it was time to move on to adding details and smoothing things out.

I measured everything out and marked off the detail placement with pin pricks to line everything up and make sure the distances and angles were correct. Then to get the indented seam lines in the mask I simply played ‘connect the dots’ with a small metal dowel, pressing it into clay until all the lines were at an even depth. The rounded recessed areas were made using a small plastic tube, sharpening one end and again just pressing it into the clay. In the final stages of the sculpting process I will brush the clay with mineral spirits once or twice to help smooth out the clay.

Next up was making the first mold. I used Smooth-On’s Rebound 25 for this mold brushing on 5-6 layers IIRC. Knowing I only wanted one cast from this mold make a cheap and dirty mother mold using plaster bandages and coating it with resin. I used this method for many mother molds on my first few projects, and while its cheap and works, If you’re planning to get a ton of casts out of your mold I recommend making a sturdier mother mold (like I did for the final master copy of the mask).

With the mold done, I cast up a resin prototype, ready for further refinement. As you can see from the cast, I could have done more work to smooth out the original clay sculpt, but knowing I would be making a second mold, I find it easier to smooth and refine a resin mask than the clay.
What followed was a long process of sanding, apoxie sculpt, filler primer, and wet-sanding (with multiple rounds of each), but in the end I got that original cast nice and smooth. I also backed the eyes and open spaces with sintra for the molding process – and etched ‘Henchmen Props’ and a few Reaper quotes into the sintra just for fun, and it would be there in raw casts before prep work. :P

I made a clay base to prop the mask up for molding, and set about on another Rebound 25 mold. Knowing I wanted to do a 2 part mother mold for the final mold, I added registration keys to keep the molds aligned when casting from them in the future. After the silicone mold was done, I made a quick cardboard divider, and filled in the seams with clay.

For the mother mold I started with a base detail layer of EpoxAcoat GREY from Smooth-On, and followed up with 3 more layers with fiberglass mat for strength. On top of that I added a few coats of Plasti-Paste (Again from Smooth-On) for further support and strength, I want this mold to last a long time!). Once the first half is done, the cardboard and clay divider was removed, and the exposed silicone and raised part of the first mother mold half are sprayed with mold release, and the same mother mold process is repeated on the opposite side.
After both halves are done setting, I drilled 5 holes in the raised areas through both sides of the mother mold, which are threaded with bolts and wingnuts to hold the mold firmly together while casting.

With final master mold entirely done, next was casting up the first copy of Reaper’s mask (I used Smooth-On’s Smooth-Cast 65D). For these masks, I did about 6-7 thin coats of 65D for a strong and lightweight casting, and after the final layer is done the masks are left in the mold for at least 20-30 minutes to let the casting fully set and cool down before demolding.

Kaneda Costume & Gear (Akira)

Sadly, I don't quite have the budget or ability to make that beautiful bike. But I can make some vinyl riding gear and a big foam gun!

Throughout the course of the comic series and movie Kaneda wears plenty of different leather designs, but I'll be working off the one pictured above. It's just so cool.

I'm going to make the jacket and pants out of red vinyl from scratch, and I'm starting to draft those patterns this weekend. I'm not sure yet how exactly I'm going to make the gun- probably PVC pipe and foam. My first priority is the costume portion, as I'm planning on wearing it to Sakuracon come April, and I've never worked with vinyl before.

Hey everyone! I was hoping to design some suits for people looking to get them printed off onto lycra and sewn to fit. Are there any costumes that anyone is looking to have designed? I cant wait to get some ideas rolling and add some new work to my portfolio! Randage out.

I used darkside501st pep file. It's gonna be a slow build since I have limited time to work on it. These photos are taken over the span of a month.

Mostly satisfied with top I continued with body filler on the front and jaws. Lots of filler on the top of the eyes to get them even since they were a bit indented.

Zelda Hyrule Warriors -WIP

I am currently making the Hyrule Warriors version of Zelda. I have loved Zelda for as long as I can remember and once I saw this armored version I HAD to cosplay her! This cosplay is especially exciting to me because it requires just about all cosplay crafting techniques you can think of. There is armor crafting, sewing, corset making, gem casting and wig styling. Anyway here is my progress so far.

This is one of many reference photos I am using. I am making this as close to the character as possible however at the same time putting my own design into it. I will also be making her sword (not pictured here).

The armor is being crafted with worbla. The chest piece was the first thing I made. As you can see I am not using the exact designs as the original piece. I wanted to put my own design into the armor.

I am still not entirely happy with the leg pieces. I spent many hours and 4 attempts on them and decided I may go back later and try again (who knows maybe 5th times the charm). I initially wanted to embroider the pieces but after hours of fighting my sewing machine I settled on fabric paint. I am overall happy with how the paint looks.

The shoulders were easy to make except when figuring out how to fix them to my body without moving. I wanted the bottom shoulder piece to be flexible and move separately from the top shoulder piece however I couldn't get them to sit sturdy enough. I ended up attaching the bottom shoulder pieces to the top pieces. This will be less comfortable and less mobile but hey beauty is pain.

Anyone making Pirate costumes NOT from POTC or Hook/Peter Pan?

I'm interested in making a theatrical quality Pirate Captain costume other than those of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Hook, or Peter Pan. I believe I've settled on Capt. Thomas Bartholomew Red from Roman Polanski's Pirates. Just in the research and planning stages at this point, but I plan to document every step with plenty of photos along the way.

Anyone else on here into pirate costuming/cosplay besides the usual POTC fare?

I'm not very knowledgable in costuming and I was hoping someone would know where I could buy, or how I could build, the ranger suits from the '95 movie in time for NYCC'15 and anyone who has the time and knowledge I would appreciate all your help, I need as much as I can get. I'm hoping to have by the end a red, a blue, and a yellow male suit then in time a black and a pink female suit. my focus right now is the male suits, blue first because that will be mine

How much are my costumes worth?

"PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT TRYING TO SELL ANYTHING"

Hello my fellow RPF:ers!! :D
I was sitting in my living room the other day working on a new project, when i suddenly got curious about if anything i make actually has any value.
So if i may, and dont get me wrong, i would never think of selling anything of my stuff, i was wondering what you guys think :)
Since i am still pretty new to this i think many of you have a better idea of what these things are worth than me! :)

"All credit to the unfolders and makers of the pepakura files wich are mentioned in my other threads"

So here goes:

First out is my stormtrooper. This one was my first and really a crappy build.
It was made using my home-made vacuum-former, using Polystyrene sheets.
I made the molds out of cardboard and thats why it has no smooth edges.

Time spent: About 150 hours
Money spent: About 120 US dollars

Pictures:

Second out is my Iron Man build, and this time i did not freehand it, but instead i used jfcustom's foam files for an Iron Man mark 6 costume.
This one got way better and i have recieved quite alot compliments for it. It is made out of EVA-foam.

Time Spent: About 120 hours
Money Spent: About 80 US dollars

Pictures:

Next up is my Deathstoke Helmet, made this one also using jfcustom's foam files.
It is made out of EVA-foam.

Time Spent:
About 10 hours
Money Spent: About 20 US dollars

Pictures:

Up next is my Skyrim Nightingale Armor. Made this one for my girlfriend, got cape, mask, boots and all :)
I would say this one is my favorite! It is made out of EVA-foam.

Time Spent: About 70 hours.
Money Spent: About 50 US dollars.

Pictures:

Last is my newly made Shadowtrooper Helmet. Got the files from the pepakura library on facebook! :)
It is made out of EVA-foam.

Time Spent: About 10 hours.
Money Spent: About 30 US dollars.

So I was in a really cool D3 group for Katsucon with my T13 crusader. I'd like to share some of the final photos for some feedback, not only on this set but to help improve future dets as well. I already tweaked the helmet to fit better and pulled up the tunic thing a little more after the con. The progress photos can be found here along with more final photos.

Greeetings,
After many hair pulling out, I thought i would ask here on where i can find Blue mirror/chrome/reflective/one way tint film. I want to tint sun glass lenses for a costume Im working on, but cant seem to find a replicable site in the USA. I tried to call local tint shops, but I guess blue mirror tint, isnt in high demand.
Any one know of a good, reliable site in the US?

Alright, so I've been looking and googling for these for a while now. It doesn't help that I don't know what that type of sole is called, so any help is appreciated.

Does anyone in here know where I can find black dress shoes with cuban heel AND that type of sole? Everything I find has only one or the other.

Iron Man MK 42 Pepakura Assembly Questions

So I am in the home stretch of creating my first pepakura helmet. I went with an Iron Man Mk 42 helmet. My question is once I get to the point where I am ready to resin/fiberglass the helmet, should I assemble the whole thing together or should I resin/fiberglass it in pieces and them assemble it. Right now there is the main part of the helmet the back part that would cover the bottom back of the skull and then the mask. This is my first attempt at something like this so I want to make sure that I do it right. Thanks!

Hello All!
A year or two back I did a fallout 3 plasma rifle... This will be an accompanyment to that project (although if I go full armor suit I'm going to integrate the weaponry into the suits forearms)...

This helmet will be based on a piece of concept art by Trufanov on Deviant art... So full credits to him for the original concept!

As of now I have a plaster cast of my head and I will start sculpting over it with automotive clay... Get the base form, cast, detail and break into parts, recast, electronics, paint.. BOO YAA!

I don't have my camera right now but expect pics in the next few days.

In the meantime, feel free to check out the plasma rifle!

I was lucky enough to grab a great cast of the CHROMA VOW Helmet from Destiny, produced by Gary Sterley Studios...

Here's a pic of his final version... it's a great cast.

(APOLOGIES if the pictures post oddly, using Tapatalk.)

So far all I've done is basic sanding and trimming, and have removed the area for the lens. I'll be using a Hobart lens when it arrives later this week. My oversized noggin also required me to remove the rear back of the helmet a La an Ironman helmet, I'll reattach with fabric and magnets later.

Follow my progress as I occasionally sand, prime, sand, prime, curse, prime, paint, rinse repeat!

I'll be going Dead Orbit for those fans of the game out there...
